What we enjoy doing and eating
Shop local and eat local
For those who like to cook, try out two local groceries stores that carry local produces, Salamanca Fresh in Kingston and Hills street Grocer in Blackmans Bay. Summer Month is the time when local fruit is abundant including strawberries and raspberries in late November and December; cherries and apricot in late December to late January; blueberries, greengages in January to early March. Other produce that we love from the two grocery stores are lamb cutlet, beef, local sourdough breads, potatoes (try pinkeye or Nicola) and of course salmon (both fresh and smoke salmon), local cheeses. If you are after sashimi salmon or kingfish, then go to the fish shop in Mures lower deck, or the fish man on Constitution Dock in the city.
To eat out:
Local quick and delicious bites are Pep Pizza on Kingston Beach (they deliver), or Iroyuki Ramen Bar on Channel Highway for great ramen.
Fish and chips: mures lower deck, or the corner takeaway shop on Kingston Beach.
If you are after really good pies, insanely good bread and pastry then take a 20 minutes drive to Summer Kitchen café in Ranelagh.
Restaurants: the Beach on Blackmans Bay, Syra in Battery Point, Urban Greek, Aloft, or Peppina. Elizabeth street on North Hobart has a strip of restaurants from middle eastern to Asian to great modern Australian cuisine.
Local attractions: after you do your top of the lists in Hobart (Bruny Island, Port Arthur – Cape Raoul and tessellated pavement in Eagle Hawk Neck, Mount Wellington, Salamanca market, MONA), then visit these local hidden gems: Blackmans Bay beach (take a coastal walk from the Beach all the way to the dog park), Kingston Beach (if you are keen you can walk all the way to Taroona Beach), Conningham beach, and Fossil Cove in Blackmans Bay.
